Overview

About this destination

Murud-Janjira Fort is one of the strongest marine forts in India, located on an island off the coastal village of Murud in Raigad district. Built by the Siddis in the 15th century, this impregnable fort stood unconquered through attacks by the Portuguese, British, and Marathas.

The name ‘Janjira’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘Jazeera’, meaning island. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea, it remains a remarkable example of ancient naval architecture and maritime defense.
