Overview

About this destination

Known as the 'Gibraltar of the East', Vijaydurg Fort is one of Maharashtra’s oldest and strongest sea forts. Originally built by Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar dynasty and later expanded by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it stands majestically on the Konkan coast.

Surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, this fort served as a primary naval base for the Maratha Empire. It is famous for its sophisticated underwater defensive wall and its role as the headquarters for the Maratha Navy under Kanhoji Angre.
