Overview
Raigad Fort was made Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital in 1674. The Raigad district guide places it about 25 km from Mahad and identifies the court area, Ganga Sagar lake and Maha Darwaja among its landmarks. These give a visit a historical focus beyond the hilltop views.
Plan the journey in three parts: reaching the base, getting up to the fort and walking between the sights. The district describes a ropeway, but its existence does not establish today's service or remove the need to walk on the plateau. Choose an ascent that the whole group can also manage on the return.
Highlights
Court area and Ganga Sagar
Use the court remains and lake as anchors for a manageable heritage circuit. Read the interpretation at the site before moving between monuments; a shorter visit with time to understand the capital is more useful than rushing to every viewpoint.
Maha Darwaja

Prefer a day with a dry forecast and enough daylight for both directions. An early start is a planning choice, not a statement of opening time. Rain, heat and poor visibility can change how much of the fort your group can comfortably cover.

Confirm the descent arrangement at the base, make the ascent, then choose a compact circuit around the court area and lake. Keep a meal break and a return buffer before adding another sight. This is a suggested sequence, not a field-tested timed itinerary.
Walking or ropeway?
A stair ascent makes the climb a substantial part of the day. If considering the ropeway, ask about queues, the last downward service and walking after arrival. Do not rely on it as an unconfirmed backup after starting a walk.

Access and mobility
Ask which paths are open and how many steps remain on your intended circuit. Do not promise step-free access on the basis of a ropeway ride. Keep children away from exposed edges and follow barriers.
Supplies
Carry drinking water and a snack for the return as well as the ascent. Do not depend on fort tanks for potable water. Keep luggage light enough to carry throughout the visit.
Local Transit & Routes
Base journey via Mahad
Use Mahad as the approach town identified by the district guide. Ask a bus depot or driver for the exact fort-base stop and the onward connection; a service to Mahad is not proof of a through service to the fort.
Return before ascent
For a hired vehicle, agree the pickup location, waiting charges and return destination. For public transport, confirm the last connection before setting off uphill. No current route timetable or rail-to-base transfer was verified.
