Overview

About this destination

The Kopeshwar Temple, located in Khidrapur near Kolhapur, is one of Maharashtra’s finest examples of Chalukyan-style architecture dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Built around the 12th century by the Shilahara rulers, the temple features intricately carved stone pillars, sculptures, and panels depicting mythological scenes from the Puranas.

It is unique for housing two deities — Lord Shiva (Kopeshwar) and Lord Vishnu (Dhopeshwar) — symbolizing harmony between Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions.

The temple’s circular sanctum and mandapa structure, along with its grand carvings of gods, goddesses, and celestial beings, make it a hidden gem of Deccan architecture.
